Date: November 5, 2010
Time: Competition starts at 9 a.m. (Come early and watch the cooks) Lunch served about 1:30 p.m.
Where: Inn at Loreto Bay
Food: Paella Mixta (Meat, Sausage, Seafood, Fowl and Veggies),     Caesar Salad and Dessert
Cost: $200 pesos donation per person (Pay at entrance to Luncheon)
Drinks: Beer, wine, sangria, water and sodas for sale on site

BACKGROUND:   Paella is a Spanish Gastronomic recipe, composed basically of rice, saffron, and local products.  Meat, sausage, seafood, fowl and vegetables are combined together to enhance the final cooked plate.  Today almost any rice dish cooked in a paella pan (sometimes called a Paellera) is referred to as paella.   Spanish paella started out as a lunch dish made for farm families and workers toiling in the fields in the area east of Valencia. Traditionally it was cooked over an open fire made from twigs, as there was no time to wait for hot coals. The shallow open pan allowed the dish to be cooked very quickly.  It was then eaten directly from the pan.  An open wood fire is still desirable, as the flames lick the sides of the pan creating a smoky taste and creates a crusty rice base called "socarrat" in Spanish. (I presume it comes from the verb socarrar--to singe).

Roganto Premium Wines of Ensenada, will again be the sponsors of our awards.  The first place revolving "Cup & Pan Award" (The Trophy) was won last year by David and Bibi Zambrano; unfortunately they will not compete this year. First, Second and Third place winners will receive ribbons and there is also an award for the "Most Beautifully Presented" paella.

Roganto Wines will offer a free public wine-tasting and will have wine for sale by the bottle and glass.  Roganto will donate a portion of their wine sales to the Charity Fund. All proceeds go to Loreto Charities.

We hope you will join us in making this a delightful day!  The competition part of the day will start at 9 a.m. at the Inn at Loreto Bay,  in Nopolo. Competitors will have until 1 p.m. to complete their entry. We encourage you to come early and watch the cooks at work.  Shortly after 1 p.m. the paella's will be served accompanied by Caesar salad and topped off with something to satisfy your sweet tooth.  Beer, wine, sangria, sodas and water will be available for purchase.

Reserve early as attendance will be limited!  If unable to attend, please cancel your reservation.
Be sure to come early as you will want to view all of the beautiful Paella's while they are being prepared and before they are served.  Paella not served can be purchased to take home.
