LOS ALGODONES - Los Algodones welcomes winter visitors with festival

Winter visitors in town for the 2010 season are being welcomed by area communities with open arms, even our neighbors to the south.

Los Algodones, Baja Calif., will hold a celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to welcome back returning winter visitors and other border crossers.

The event will take place at 2nd Street between Avenues A and B.

It is sponsored by the Mexicali and Los Algodones Convention and Visitors Bureau.

According to a news release from the Yuma Visitors Bureau, entertainment will be provided by several sources at the event.

According to sources, scheduled entertainers include the folklorico dancers of Senior High School of Los Algodones, mariachi singers from San Luis Rio Colorado, Son., The Ranchero Singers Chavelita Velaso, the Mexicali City Police Department with Rondalla Singers and folklorico dancers from the state of Mexico.

Door prizes will be given out throughout the day's festivities, which are intended to highlight the ease and safety of making a day trip across the border to Los Algodones, the statement said.

Kristan Sheppeard, a representative of the Yuma Visitors Bureau, said she thinks the event is important for all Yumans to attend because Yuma is so close to the border.

“It's a great opportunity full of experiences just minutes from our town ... this is a celebration that everyone can get together and celebrate,” Sheppeard said.

Sheppeard said Los Algodones has a high concentration of physicians, pharmacies, dentists and other resources that winter visitors and other Yumans use throughout the year.

Sheppeard said she hopes the event gives visitors to Los Algodones a new perspective on the region.
