In 2007, we handed out 500 shoeboxes to needy children in the Los Arcos area of San Felipe. In 2008, we collected over 700 boxes and donated boxes to the children in Las Minitas area as well as many in San Felipe. This year we hope to increase the number of boxes collected as the need is greater than ever before.

Some suggestions for gifts to be put in the boxes…

TOYS: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky®, etc.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
HYGIENE ITEMS: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, small shampoo (in a plastic bag) or anything else you can think that would help.
OTHER: T-shirts, socks, ball caps; sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, shake or wind up flashlights.

Please mark on your package, the sex of the child and age (infant, 2 to 4, 5 to 9, 9 to 11, teen). Please wrap the top and bottom of the box but do not tape it shut (may need access for customs). ROSARITO BEACH - Four-thousand Cyclists Joined In Saturday's Rosarito-Ensenada 50-Mile Fun Bike Ride

More than four-thousand cyclists joined in Saturday's edition of the Rosarito-Ensenada Bike Ride, a popular internationally known event in its 31st year.

It took 15 minutes for all the brightly attired cyclists to pass by the reviewing stand on Boulevard Benito Juarez, in front of the Rosarito Beach Hotel, as Rosarito Beach Mayor Hugo Torres and Baja Secretary of Tourism Juan Tintos sounded the starting horns.

International cyclists of a wide variety of ages and experience levels participate in the picturesque coastal and inland ride that concludes in the port city of Ensenada. About a third of the riders are from the United States, said organizer Gary Foster.

The September race attracted several-hundred more riders than April's edition, said Foster.

"All of us are ambassadors for Baja," Foster told cyclists prior to the ride's start. "Tell all your friends, tell your family what it's really like down here."

Tourism Secretary Tintos expressed similar sentiments: "Go back and tell them how great Rosarito is, how great Ensenada is."

Mayor Torres said the three-decade-old ride is one of Baja's signature events and Rosarito is honored to host it. The next ride is scheduled for May 14 of next year.

ROSARITO BEACH - Rosarito Festival Features Grammy-Winning Mariachi Divas & Benefits Boys & Girls Club

A concert and two-day competition this weekend will be highlighted by the Grammy-award-winning Mariachi Divas in a spectacular Saturday night concert by the sea.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the construction of Rosarito's $1.3-million-dollar Boys & Girls Club.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for people to see some of the best mariachi music ever presented in this region, while helping a great cause," said Boys & Girls Club president Rosy Torres.

Gil Sperry, organizer of the event expected to attract thousands, has modeled it after similar ones held in the U.S. It also will be the first public concert in Mexico by the Los Angeles-based Mariachi Divas.

From 6 to 9 on Saturday, the Divas will headline a three-hour concert. In 2009 the internationally known 20-member group was awarded the Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music for its album "Canciones de Amor."

"We have many fans in Mexico and are looking forward to seeing them at our first public concert there, as well as many of our friends from the U.S.," said Diva leader Cindy Shea.

Maya, Timoteo, El Charro Negro, Olga Flores, Folklorico Ixtlazihuatl, Genesis, and Beto Jimenez Maeda also will be performing. The seaside event will feature wine, food and VIP areas.

The Saturday and Sunday beachfront spectacular on the grounds of the Rosarito Beach Hotel also will feature both mariachi and folkloric ballet competitions from 10 to 3 each day with groups from junior high through college age from both countries

Junior high and high school competition is Saturday; university and open on Sunday. U.S. competitors include groups from Chula Vista, Anaheim and Tucson.

"This truly will be a spectacular event," said Sperry, author of several books including "Mariachi for Gringos."

Tickets for various portions of the event begin at $7.50 for children and $10 for adults, with complete packages priced at $25 and $45. Tickets for the concert alone range from $10 to $40 and VIP packages also are offered.

Torres, and local author Gil Sperry to make this event successful. Sperry’s first book, Mariachi for Gringos, is the inspiration for using this beloved music to create the foundations for a strong bridge between the cultures while securing the futures of their at-risk youngsters.

Artist's Get Ready for the 2nd Annual La Paz Festival D'arte 2010
With even more help from the State of Baja Sur, City of La Paz, this year promises improvements over last year's enormously successful Festival. Maureen Ryan, Chairperson, has anticipated the holidays, the market, and the opportunity to Celebrate all forms of art in La Paz.

Location: Marina Palmira. Booth locations changed for a more contiguous setting. The audience seating & stage for the musical performances will be situated in shade and closer to the booth area than last year. As suggested by many of last years attendees, a food fair is added featuring some of our local La Paz restaurants.

All proceeds benefit FANLAP and Baja Dogs. Well known artist, Rafael Chavez states "everything about the Festival D'Arte benefits La Paz, and our hope this year is that the entire community will be involved in every aspect of the event".

SAN FELIPE - ZAPP Update

Just a quick status update to let you know that as of October 1st, the ZAPP Spay/Neuter Street Project will be opening its new location here in San Felipe. On Saturday, October 16th we will hold our first no to low cost clinic, and we need some financial help to buy paint, building materials, lighting, recovery supplies, and so much more.

Bill Spradlin of San Felipe Home Builders is creating a substantial sized, well lit, well equipped surgery room for Dr. Solis and his assistants from the University, and we'll have a very efficient recovery area for post surgical patients where volunteers will oversee dogs and cats as they come out of surgery.

As you know, back in December of 2009 all the supplies ZAPP had accumulated for our then existing spay/neuter project were given directly to the ZAPP Center which is now permanently closed, and we are unable to get any of our supplies back so we can continue this work. If you can make a donation of any size to help in the overall cost of opening our new center, we would be very grateful.

We plan to hold at least two clinics every month, fixing 100+ animals so we can get back on track with fertility control in San Felipe, with an overall goal of doing 200 spays and neuters each and every month.If we can just fix 75% of the stray and indigent animal population, we will ultimately see zero additional population growth and we will see the the end of roundups and euthanasia. Police Extortion in Ciudad Constitution & La Paz

Recently my husband and I made a trip to La Paz (Sept, 8th.). We had left about 6AM in the morning, driving south on Highway 1. as we were entering Ciudad Constitution we were followed by police, seeing this, we knew our speed had to be the speed limit. We had just past the Super Ley store and we were pulled over by the police car, which had one officer and a rookie, at least he seemed to be. The officer was only wearing a t-shirt with a look alike badge printed on it. My Husband got out of the truck and the police officer approached the truck telling us that we did not make a stop at the signal, which was out of order. We tried to explain that we did, in fact the car behind us honked at us to go as we were probably there too long? The police knew this because he had followed us through town on the frontage road.

The officer took my husbands license and said we would have to go to the station on the next day. We explained we were on our way to La Paz and that would not be able to do so. My husband said lets go to the station now, but the officer just acted like he did not know what we were saying. After much time wasted and the officer trying to say we would have to come to the station tomorrow, we finally said "how much for you to pay the ticket?". He wanted 1000 pesos, but took 400 pesos and was on his way. He appeared to be teaching the rookie how to make money off of the Americans,

NOT THE END OF THE MEXICAN POLICE - AROUND 6 PM THE SAME DAY, WE WERE IN LA PAZ

Here we had been driving for hours, pulling our boat to the Gold Cup Fishing Tournament and just wanted to get settled into our hotel. Having to deal with launching the boat and trying to get to dentist appointments and doctor appointments, we were just exhausted, so being only about one mile from our hotel, we stopped to get water, and found we had two beers in the cooler, so my husband and I decided to have a beer, since our friend was driving.

Again we were pulled over by a police on a motorcycle, and there wasn't a violation was made. The officer asked how many cervasas we've had, and our friend said only this one and this is not something we do and we were not intoxicated, in fact the hotel was just across the street. He insisted we were all drinking, so we said "okay, let's go to the station", he told us it would be very expensive, about 2500 pesos, we said okay, but we are not intoxicated and we would follow him. He didn't make a move, after much waiting the officer said we could pay 1100 pesos, again we said "let's go to the station", again he did not move, finally after knowing we were hot, very hot and very tired, my husband gave to the officer 400 pesos, he just smiled and let us go. I know we were in the wrong about paying and vowed not to do it again. Our stay in La Paz was nice, until our drive home.

YES, AGAIN WE WERE PULLED OVER.

This time my husband was really mad and asked the officer what did he do wrong. Never could the officer tell us what violation, we had committed. At this point my husband said "either take me to jail or let me go, I am not giving you any money. Let's go to the station".

The officer again held him for some time, trying to think of what to say to this angry American. Finally after more wasted time, he let us go.

We really need to do something about these people, we think the next time, we are going to try to take pictures of the officers.

ROSARITO BEACH - Harley Riders Donate to 300 childeren

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---More than 250 motorcyclists from the U.S. donated backpacks and other items for 300 Rosarito school children at this weekend's annual Harley Charity Run.

As well as the school supplies, bicycles and toys were among the items donated, said Leticia Gonzalez, director of DIF, the city's family social services agency, who helped coordinate the event.

Ride organizers Martin and Sonia Resendez said the concept was developed years ago when during a motorcycle tour to the area they learned of the needs of some of the city children. Since, the city and charity run have become part of their lives.

"We are very grateful for the donation from the Harley riders," said Rosarito Mayor Hugo Torres. "The goodwill from U.S. citizens, both those who visit and those who now live here, is deeply appreciated."

This year a convoy of motorcyclists and vehicles carrying donations rode from Otay Mesa to Rosarito with a special escort. The Harley Run also included a celebration at the popular club Papas & Beers.

MEXICO - Mexico's Bicentennial

Mexico commemorated the 200th anniversary of the beginning of its War of Independence. In September of 1810, a Mexican priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla uttered a call to arms against the Spanish, later known as the Grito de Dolores ("Cry of Dolores"). Soon after began a series of battles with the Spanish that would build into a war that lasted over a decade, eventually resulting in independence. This bicentennial year, tens of thousands of Mexicans thronged the streets of Mexico City to celebrate. The celebrations took place under a somewhat subdued light though, amid the violence of a brutal nationwide drug war and vocal criticism of government spending on the lavish ceremonies. WEATHER - Tropical Storm Georgette

Tropical Storm Georgette brought only squalls and locally heavy rainfall as it made landfall at the southern tip of Baja California late Monday.

The storm then crossed the Gulf of California and produced further rains for Mexico's Sinaloa and Sonora states on the country's mainland.

Remnants of Georgette later triggered heavy rainfall across the Desert Southwest and Midwest.
