BAJA - The Baja Peninsular at Night

This is a recent night photo taken from the International Space Station that shows Southern California and the Baja peninsular. Even ten years ago, this view of Baja would have been almost completely dark, but now we see the lights of the growing cities as development and infrastructure arrives. North of San Felipe, almost half way to the blob of light that is the Mexicali/El Centro region, you can see a spot of light that is from the operating gold mine just north of the Ensenada road. This mine is now a significant employer of labor in the San Felipe region and has been a boom in filling vacant apartments and unused hotel rooms with engineers and administrators involved in the operations.

"Good Dog" requires a ride home to Rosarito from Guerro Negro, Baja

Posted by: "Richard" richardofbaja@yahoo.com richardofbaja
The question is: do you know anyone going north (Rosarito) from Baja Sur that can stop in Guerro Negro and give our dog ' a ride home?' He's good natured, calm, and mostly obeys simple commands. He weighs about 65 pounds and will stay "in the back" when you tell him "stay" - If you can 'bring him home' - we would gladly help out on your gas expenses. All he needs is a couple of times to go for a short walk to do his normal body functions. He will have his food and water bowls along with his bed - and, he is an experienced traveler.
Please pass this email forward to anyone you think who can help give "him a ride home."
I look forward to hearing from you and wish you a wonderful day.

SAN FELIPE - Cuba Gooding Sr. Performs to Sold Out Crowd.
On Saturday June 18th, the Baja Good Life Club hosted Cuba Gooding Sr. the lead singer of the soul group The Main Ingredient at La Ventana del Mar Resort Pavilion at El Dorado Ranch in San Felipe. Cuba performed his most notable hit, "Everybody Plays the Fool" (1972) as well as his forthcoming release "Begins with the Family" and many others to a sold-out crowd.
Cuba's performance was high-energy fun that not only brought the audience to their feet for the incredible music, and strong vocal performance, but also his message "that the children are the most important."
Cuba performed the entire event free; giving all the proceeds to over 50 children in Casa de Fe and El Oasis orphanages within the greater San Felipe area. The proceeds raised are going to San Felipe dentist Dr. Jason Corpus, so that he can examine, clean and fix the all children's teeth from Casa de Fe and El Oasis Orphanages.
Cuba a resident of Baja and wanted to let people know that Baja is a safe and welcoming place, and that in the fall he will be opening the Cuba Gooding Sr. Pyramid Amphitheater in Tijuana with the goal of bringing other artists, such as himself to Baja.

NEWS - Border Fast Track Lane for Tourists

Courtesy of Baja Bound
Border Fast Track Pass - August 2010 Update
The Fast Track lane is still working great and that means considerably shorter wait times! We have heard that the wait is about 25-30 minutes - YAY!
Fast Track Pass Tips:
- Be sure to double check before you go that the hotel or restaurant has the pass (currently in Rosarito, Ensenada and Tijuana)
- Need help finding the lane? See Baja Bounds pictoral on finding the Fast Track Pass lane
- Google Map to the Fast Track Lane from the Río Zone or along the road that borders the U.S. - La Internacional.
- Remember that usually there are cones that block the lane as you approach the booth. If you pull off near the cones the officers will come out of the booth to take your ticket and graciously let you through.
A new border lane has been officially opened at the Tijuana/San Ysidro border crossing and it isn't a SENTRI lane. The Baja California Secretary of Tourism together with the Tijuana Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Secretary of Economic Development in Tijuana have designated a lane for tourists (vacationers, business people and medical tourism) who have visited certain merchants in Baja. Until now, this lane had been dedicated to medical tourism and has now been expanded.
What is the Border Fast Pass?
The border fast pass program, called Fast Track, is a single-use coupon that gives you access to a special lane designated for tourists. You will still need to present the necessary documentation to U.S. border officials. As of June 1, 2009 you will need a passport.
How much time can I save by using Fast Track?
This lane will significantly reduce your wait time to get back into the U.S. Reports say the wait on average is 30 minutes or so, but officials say the goal is a 15 minute wait.
How do I get a Fast Track pass?
Certain merchants in the city of Rosarito, Ensenada and Tijuana carry the Border Fast Pass. As the program develops, more will be added.
If you are visiting Rosarito, you may obtain your Fast Track pass by visiting these establishments:
- Rosarito Beach Hotel
- Rosarito Inn
- Bobby's by the Sea
- Grand Baja Resort
- Calafia Hotel
- Festival Plaza
- Brisas del Mar Hotel
- Mongolian Grill
- La Casa de la Langosta restaurant
- Puerto Nuevo II restaurant
- Fausto Polanco hacienda furniture
You may obtain the Border Fast Pass by visiting the merchants who are participating in the Fast Track Pass program and spending about U.S. $70 ($1000 pesos). We advise to confirm with the hotel or venue first that they offer the Fast Track and how to get it once you are there.
Program participants:
- Posada El Rey Sol
- Estero Beach Hotel
- Adobe Guadalupe Hotel
- Desert Inn Hotel
- Best Western El Cid
- El Cortez Baja Inn
- Hotel Santo Tomas Baja Inn
- El Rey Sol restaurant
- Sano's Steak House
- Playitas Club del Mar
- Establishments in Tijuana:
- La Casa del Mole - Playas de Tijuana
- Dali Suites - Playas de Tijuana
- Hotel Real del Rio
- Corona Plaza Hotel
- La Carnicería
- Vivamex Health Care
- Caliente
- Vita Spa
Only the San Ysidro border crossing has special Border Fast Pass lane at this time.
Where is the Fast Track lane located?
If you are heading to the border from the scenic toll road, once you are near the border line on Calle Segunda, you will take the far right lane that is sectioned off by concrete dividers and parallels the regular border line. Look for the blue signs that say "With Pass Only" and the blue signs that say "Medical Services." After going up the bridge, you will see a booth with an official who will take your Fast Track pass and give you access to the lane. What a breeze!
How much does it cost to get a Fast Track pass?
The pass is free once you have met the requirements mentioned above.
Will there be more Fast Track lanes in the future?
Currently the Border Fast Pass program is a pilot program. If the lane is a success, more lanes will be added.
Is the Fast Track lane like the SENTRI?
It is similar to the SENTRI in that you can cross the border faster, however there is no background check and the pass is only good for one crossing.
