LA PAZ - FANLAP is Making a Difference for Children

NOVEMBER, 2011 Number 9

FANLAP SUBASTA 2011
Don´t forget the FANLAP Subasta which will take place Sunday December 4, 2011, in the parking lot of Marina de La Paz, Calles Topete y Legaspy.

We need items such as tables, lamps, any article for the home, fishing equipment, or boating equipment,  whatever you have gathering dust or filling your spare room or forcing you to raise your boat´s waterline.

Please bring all saleable items to the office of Marina de La Paz. On the day of the event we need volunteers to help with setting up the booths with the tables, chairs, tents and stage, people to help at the beer and soft drink booth,  or the bake sale or bazaar booth, or money changers.  We especially need bi-lingual volunteers to help in all booths. If you wish to volunteer, contact Mary Shroyer at mary@marinalapaz.com  or Judy Peterson at jupete49@hotmail.com.

We guarantee that you´ll have a lot of fun. Proceeds will be used for FANLAP´s programs:  lunch for school children five days a week, scholarships for Junior and Senior High School students, and our library-learning center.

RESULTS OF THE MATCHING FUNDS CAMPAIGN
Thank you to those who donated in July through International Community Foundation as part of our celebration of the ten-year-anniversary of our relationship with ICF, based in San Diego, California.

Because of your generosity we received almost 15,000 USD which were matched. Tax deductible donations made in December through ICF or directly to FANLAP will again be matched. You may make a tax deductible donation through ICF, online by clicking http:/donate.icf-xchange.org/donate.php/losninosdelapaz  or write a check to International Community Foundation and send it to them at 2505 N Avenue, National City, California, 91950.

Please write on your check “children of La Paz,” so that FANLAP is certain to receive your contribution. Or write your check to Fundacion Ayuda Niños La Paz, A. C. and mail it to us at Calle Santiago, Col. Bella Vista, 23050,  La Paz, BCS, Mexico. Thank you for helping us to serve the children of La Paz.  Together we are making a difference.

WEBSITE UPDATES
We have updated our webpage at www.lapazninos.org.  Although we liked the look of our previous page, this one can be easily updated and maintained by our office. You may also follow us on Facebook or Twitter by going to http://www.facebook.com/fanlap and clicking ¨like¨, and  http://www.twitter.com/LaPazNinos.

On Facebook we have an events page to tell you of upcoming fundraisers such as the December 1 concert with Soprano Loyda Vazquez at the concert hall of the School of Music Morelos 1055, esquina con Marcelo Rubio.  We hope to have at least one monthly event from October through June.

SCHOLARSHIP MEETING
On Saturday November 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the dining room building, on CalleRio Grande between Rio Nilo and Rio Jordan in Colonia Laguna Azul, we will hold the second meeting of scholarship students for school year 2011 2012.

If you would like to come to this meeting and interact with some of the students, call Judy at cell phone number 612 102 0290 or send an email to jupete49@hotmail.com. At this meeting students are required to bring their latest report card which demonstrates they have maintained their required grade point average, and bring a letter written to their sponsor  or to FANLAP if they don´t have a specific sponsor.

OUR FIRST COLLEGE GRADUATE
Our primary objectiveat FANLAP is to enablestudents of low income families to complete their education.  Many of the families which move into the Colonias we serve are from other states of the republic  coming to La Paz seeking work in construction, in restaurants or in  agriculture.

These are the same people who would have crossed the border to work in the United States during better economic times.

Evelia is the daughter of one of those families of immigrants, who came from Oaxaca to work in the fields.  When we met Evelia on the malecon six years ago we were impressed with her ability to speak English.  We sought and secured a sponsor who paid for Evelia to attend teacher´s college.

After graduating, she spent two and a half years working as our homework club teacher. Two weeks ago Evelia was offered a job with the Secretary of Public Education which she could not refuse.  She is now teaching at a high school in Cabo San Lucas.

Thank you, Evelia, for all you have done to help other students who, like you, are seeking to make a better life for themselves and their families.

FANLAP OUR MISSION:
To provide basic support of food and education for children and adolescents from marginalized neighborhoods to give them the opportunity to complete their education and improve the quality of their lives.

HOW YOU MAY HELP
If you would like to be part of our fundraising committee, or if you would like to volunteer as an English or math teacher, or read books to children in English or Spanish help in any other way, contact Judy Peterson at jupete49@hotmail.com or Veronica at fanlap@hotmail.com.

CERTIFICATION OF PROFESIONALISM AND TRANSPARENCY
CEMEFI (Mexican Centro for Philathropy) has awarded FANLAP its certificate of professisonalism and transparency.  We are the only non-profit in Baja California Sur to have this honor.  This gives us the right to use this logo:

LEAVE A GIFT WHICH WILL ENDURE
For the last 10 years we have helped hundreds of children with proper nutrition, providing materials and paying transportation and tuition costs for them to attend junior and senior high school, and now have a library to provide a quiet place where students can study and young children can learn the world of books and computers.

This is thanks to our supporters, like you. Because we have to rely on our supporters for over 80% of our funding to make our work possible, donations in Wills are hugely important to FANLAP. More than 1,000 other children could be benefiting from FANLAP’s scholarship program if we had the funds.  You can help us to maintain the present number of children we are sponsoring, and to reach others in the future by leaving a gift to our organization in your Will.

We have an endowment fund at International Community Foundation; to learn of your options for giving to FANLAP, you may contact them at: International Community Foundation 2505 N Avenue National City, CA 91950 Telephone: 619-336-2256 Fax: 619-336-2249 Office hours: Mon.-Fri., 8:00 am - 5:00 pm To make a tax deductible donation you may:
